"Year 1 children at BTH looking at traditional tales have been engaged in educational experiences stemming from our exploration of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears,"
After reading the tale, students engaged in a brainstorming session where they speculated about what could be Mama Bear’s secret porridge recipe. This creative and collaborative discussion laid the groundwork for our subsequent research activities.
To expand our culinary exploration, the students embarked on researching various porridge recipes from cultures around the world. Through this investigation, they discovered several intriguing and also scientific facts such as mixing lemon and milk can cause the milk to curdle, a phenomenon they were eager to experiment with during our cooking activities.
A highlight of our exploration was the engaging visit from Chef Emily, who graciously shared her culinary expertise with the students deepening their understanding of the nutritional value of porridge.
While preparing and cooking the porridge, students had the hands-on experience of preparing porridge themselves, putting into practice the scientific principles they had studied. They measured ingredients, observed changes during cooking, and tasted their creations, offering them immediate results to present and interpret. This practical inquiry encouraged them to ask further scientific questions, such as “What happens to the porridge as it cooks?” and “How do different ingredients affect the taste and texture of porridge?”
At BTH teachers provide students with more holistic and meaningful learning experiences through cross curricular teaching that helps students make connections between different subjects and deepen their understanding of complex concepts; offering lessons they will carry with them beyond the classroom.
