Year 1 Class Time Activities

4th March 2022

Year 1 students resumed school for the second half of the term, eager to learn. We Started The fiction unit thus Our English lessons were based on Ronda and David Armitage's book The LightHouse Keeper's Lunch. We concentrated on speaking and listening skills, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension this week.

During our comprehension lessons, we applied our newly acquired skills to identify key words in a text. We also learn a variety of new vocabulary words each day, such as appetising, scrumptious, and devoured, from our text and completed activities based on the meaning of these words

We learnt about Mrs Grinling concocting new recipes and our Food & Nutrition teacher together the Year 10s invited us to observe them prepare a Lemon Cake

On Thursday, we brainstormed a list of ingredients for a lighthouse sandwich. The children were surprised to find the ingredients, ready to make sandwiches for our long trip, early on Friday morning. Some thought it would be best if we ate right away, lest we run into the pesky seagulls on the road.

The children are Looking Forward to week 9 where we will incorporate play in learning some of the activities include:

  • Creating a mechanism to send food from The Little White Cottage on the cliff to the LightHouse eg Pulley.
  • Seaside art - taking imaginary trips to the seaside and painting the views in spirals.
  • Singing sailor ballards in Drama.

Computing in Year 1

Since the beginning of Term 2, we have been indulging in various fun activities. We did the story Chicken Liken in English and also did a fun assembly from it in week 4 of this term.

We therefore went ahead and created our own characters based on the story Chicken Liken where the students created 4 of their own characters and drew them on a four-page booklet as seen in the picture here:

We went ahead and drew the characters using tux paint. Tux paint is a computer application. The linking of the subjects throughout the curriculum was extremely fun for the students making it easier for them to recall what was done.
