World Environment Day 2021

8th June 2021

World Environment Day is held - worldwide - on June 5th but at Braeburn Imani, we started our celebration days ago, over half term. Our activities were focused around the theme for this year: Reimagine, Restore, Recreate'. The children diligently carried out environmental activities taking care of their homes by picking up litter and watering gardens. They also created items for the junk art museum by REusing and REcycling various materials.

On Friday, each class got a chance to enjoy the outdoors with a picnic at break time and a nature walk around the school. We learnt a lot about the green energy generated by the solar panels and the benefits to our environment. In high school, a carousel of activities ran including a Netflix Party of David Attenborough's 'A life on Our Planet', yoga with Mr. Mauka, nature walks, perspective photography and a debate on energy mixes and decision making.

The highlight of the day, however, was the tree planting activity at Mt. Kilimambogo in Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park. The money donated for the home clothes day went towards buying seedling, 500 of them. Year 6, 10 and 12 students represented the school tirelessly planting the trees at the top of the mountain. We look forward to the long term restoration of our environment thanks to the life lessons shared through the day.
