Have you ever wondered how scientists discover new things about the world? Working scientifically involves following a process to ask questions, make observations, and find answers. This process helps us understand everything from tiny cells to vast galaxies!
Year 4 children in Braeside Thika are also engaged in working scientifically. They conduct enquiries on nearly all the topics covered in science. They have learnt that every scientific investigation starts with a question. This question is important as it helps scientists focus on what they want to learn.
After forming a question, they gather information by reading books, watching videos, or using the internet and create a hypothesis, which is an educated guess about what they think the answer might be. Next, they are eager to test their hypothesis by carrying out an inquiry. They plan and execute enquiries, changing variables to observe different outcomes.
During their inquiry, they carefully document everything they observe. They use charts, graphs, or photographs to record their findings. This data helps them understand what happened during their investigation.
After collecting their data, they analyse it carefully. This analysis allows them to see whether their hypothesis was correct. Based on their findings, they can draw a conclusion that answers their original question.
Finally, they share what they learnt by writing reports, giving presentations, or creating posters. Sharing their findings helps others learn from their work.
Working scientifically is not just for scientists in labs; it’s a way of thinking that helps everyone understand the world better.
