When Math Meets Art

15th March 2025

Year 8 students had a fun and exciting time learning about tessellations and creating curves using straight strings and sticks. They were amazed to see how simple shapes could fit together perfectly without any gaps or overlaps. They enjoyed drawing and coloring different tessellations, making their designs creative and unique. This activity helped them understand patterns and symmetry in a hands-on way.

Another exciting part of the lesson was making curves using straight strings and sticks. At first, it seemed impossible, but as they followed the steps, they saw beautiful curved shapes form. One of the most interesting shapes they created was the hyperbolic paraboloid. This shape looked like a smooth curve, but it was made only from straight lines. The students were fascinated to see how maths and art could come together to make something so cool.

Through these activities, students learned important STEM skills. They improved their problem-solving abilities by figuring out how to place the sticks and strings correctly. They also developed patience and creativity while working on their designs. The lesson taught them that maths is not just about numbers—it can also be fun and artistic.

By the end of the lesson, students felt proud of their work. They realized that geometry is not just in textbooks but also in the world around them. The experience made them more curious about how shapes and patterns appear in real life, from tiles on the floor to honeycombs in a beehive. This fun and engaging STEM lesson helped them see maths in a new and exciting way.
