The Year 4 class sought to relieve history by making The Boudica Rebellion, one that happened between 60-61 AD, come alive. This was part of our very emotive History topic which we titled : ‘ The Riotous Romans’. We have been on a journey of learning about the Roman invasion, rule and changes that were brought in the United Kingdom.
Girl power was the central theme in the play. Even after the unfortunate death of Parastagus, Boudica’s husband, she had no time to weep but immediately assumed full leadership of the tribe. Nothing beats the plausible, well constructed arguments that the children who took different roles enacted. We were treated to grim and revolting expressions from The Queen of Iceni herself, Makena on Scene 1 and Scarlett on Scene 2 which was enough to charge the already charged Iceni soldiers to do nothing but attack.
Weekling legionaries such as Milo who seemed to have missed out on the rigorous training sessions from his tribesmen- The Romans, was too cute for battle. He was among the first characters to exit the scene. Poor peasants, like Drest, resorted to living a peaceful peasant life, minding his own business and work with his hands. That was his definition of living in peace. Ambitious business men such as Rastus who knew how to read the times, capitalised on the crisis and made a kill.
It was refreshing to see the adept mastery of the topic. Of course, this play ended with a tragedy - Boudica could not stare at her own defeat. She eliminated herself.
