The Pleasant Surprise

2nd November 2021

Hooray, well rested!! We are all glad to be back for the second half, and guess what?! We are in for a pleasant surprise! Why? because we are exploring our favourite book - “Handa’s Surprise”.

The children relished every moment of turning the pages to find out what animal they would encounter next and what fruit the animals were likely to pinch from Handa's basket. Ooh, the suspense!

We had props to help the story come to life.... These included animal masks, papier Mache fruits, 3D animals and fruits to help us enact the different scenes. The excitement on the children's faces was a delight to watch......interactions were amazing as they discussed what roles to take on and this helped with their listening skills.

Just like Handa in the story, we balanced baskets with fruits on our heads. It was a bit of a challenge in the beginning but we finally were able to attempt the exercise with persistence, resilience and a spirit of “confident individuals”.

We had fun walking around the school looking for animals and describing where they were hiding. This was all captured in the photos that the children took.

The children were able to share their thought on the activity:

‘The monkey is hiding behind the slide and the ostrich has a long neck’ said Nathaniel.

‘Banana is yummy!’, said Murathime.
