The Lighthouse Keeper

9th December 2022

The Year 2s in the Art lesson were introduced to the story of Mr and Mrs Grinling. Mr Grinling works in a lighthouse and Mrs Grinling lives in a cottage , perched on the edge of the cliff. Everyday, Mrs Grinling concocts a delicious lunch for Mr Grinling and has to get it to him in the lighthouse, using a picnic basket.

The Year 2 children were able to discuss the different sandwiches that Mrs Grinling made, they linked this to their Science learning on healthy foods in the different food groups and they then designed their own sandwiches using their favorite fillings.

Mrs Grinling would pack the lunch in a picnic basket and send it over the wire. The Year 2s then designed their own picnic baskets that they would use to send over their sandwiches. Unfortunately, Mrs Grinling had a challenge! The greedy seagulls kept getting into her basket and stealing the lunch! She still kept sending the basket over the wire hoping for a solution to her problem.

Mrs Grinling would send the delicious lunch over the wire and the children had a chance to use a pulley system to send the lunch to the lighthouse tower.

Here is what the children had to say:

Mohith: We made picnic baskets for sending lunch to the lighthouse keeper, we used a pulley to get to Mr Grinling.

Jiovani: For the basket to move, pull the rope towards yourself and the line below moves in the opposite direction making the basket move. It was fun!

Chinmayee- I liked making the basket go by twisting the pulley.
