Squeezing out fun and learning

24th January 2026

At Braeside Thika, our FS2 learners recently took part in an exciting hands-on activity making fresh orange juice as an extended phonics lesson to reinforce the sound ‘o’.This fun experience supported much more than healthy habits. It nurtured key skills across multiple areas of learning.

As the children squeezed oranges, they developed fine motor skills and hand strength while also exploring early mathematical concepts like counting seeds, comparing fruit sizes and measuring juice. Pouring into cups introduced ideas of capacity in a real-life context.

Language was also enhanced as children used descriptive words like sweet, sour, juicy, and empty, while sharing their thoughts with peers. The activity encouraged collaboration, problem-solving and confident speaking.

At BTH, we believe in learning through experience. Activities like juicing help children make connections between classroom learning and the world around them, nurturing curiosity, independence and a lifelong love for learning
