Plastics Made From Plants

22nd November 2025

Materials shape our world. From the clothes we wear to the buildings we live in, they play a crucial role in our daily lives. Our Year 5 learners have had an exciting time exploring Properties of Materials this term. Through hands-on experiments, they investigated hardness, flexibility, transparency, magnetism and absorbency. They explored mixtures and solutions, separating them through filtration, sieving, decanting and evaporation. Pupils were fascinated to learn that some plastics are made from plants, metal expands when heated, and salt can be recovered from salty water through evaporation. They enjoyed using scientific vocabulary and sharing discoveries. Their curiosity, teamwork and problem-solving skills shone throughout the unit!
