Modern Foreign Languages

16th June 2023

Braeside Thika prides itself in promoting local and international culture. Using language as a conveyor of culture, we offer both Swahili and French as our modern foreign languages to supplement the predominant English language.

Unlocking New Horizons: The Value of Learning Swahili Language in Secondary School

In an increasingly interconnected world, the importance of learning a modern foreign language cannot be overstated. Secondary school is an ideal time for students to embark on this linguistic journey, as it equips them with a multitude of key skills that can shape their personal, academic, and professional lives.

Swahili is one of the Key Foreign languages offered at Braeside Thika. Some of the Key Skills that we seek to foster in the students include communication skills, cognitive abilities, cultural competences, personal development and career opportunities.

Cultural Competence

We are well aware that languages are not just systems of words and grammar; they are windows into the cultures and histories of diverse communities. High school students who study this language gain invaluable insights into different societies, customs, traditions, and perspectives. This exposure fosters cultural competence, empathy, and a global mindset. It enables students to navigate multicultural environments with respect, appreciation, and a broader understanding of the world.

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the ability to communicate in multiple languages becomes an invaluable asset. By investing in foreign language education, Braeside Thika seeks to empower their students to become global citizens who can bridge linguistic and cultural gaps, contributing to a more inclusive and understanding world.

French at Braeside Thika

French has remained a great pillar in the Languages Department in our school. It is taught from primary level to secondary, where it becomes an optional IGCSE subject.

Learners enjoy learning this language and often work on projects that seek to not only understand the language deeply but also interact with the social and cultural practices of the French language.

Here are a few thoughts from our learners:

We felt nervous because we were called to the stage when we were done practising the poem. But also it was very exciting and fun at the same time. The French Cuisine was delicious! Mostly the chicken spring roll

French is an exceptionally easy and interesting language to learn. With a variety of online games, word searches, and class activities. As an A-level French student, I can say that French has taught me to push further, be confident, and be independent in my work. I have fun watching French YouTube videos and doing interactive online tasks about A- level topics like technology, pollution, family, generation gaps, and so on.
