This week in Year Five Maths, our focus has been on measurement — understanding different units of measure and learning how to convert between them accurately. Students explored real-life applications of measuring length and width, helping them see how maths connects to everyday situations. Students worked in pairs to measure a variety of classroom and outdoor objects, such as: The width of a textbook, the length of a leaf, the height of a goal post. They recorded measurements in one unit for example, centimetres and then converted them into another unit for example, millimetres or metres. Students were encouraged to explain why they multiplied or divided, building deeper mathematical understanding. They also ordered measurements from largest to smallest and vice versa.
By practising real-world measuring tasks, pupils developed confidence in solving word problems involving distance and in applying maths beyond the classroom.
