Maths in the Outdoors.

21st September 2024

The Year 3 class have been learning about 3-D shapes and their properties. Recently, they stepped outside the walls of the classroom for an engaging and interactive mathematics lesson. Armed with simple tools: straws, molding clay and masking tape, the children transformed the school grounds into a vibrant learning space. They set out to construct various 3D shapes, including cubes, pyramids, and prisms, using straws for the edges and masking tape to secure the vertices. Working in small groups, the children collaborated, discussing how many faces, edges, and vertices each shape would require and the best way to assemble them. The activity not only strengthened their understanding of the structure of shapes but also encouraged teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The outdoor setting added an extra dimension to this lesson, giving the children space to build larger shapes and offering a refreshing break from the classroom. The session was really engaging, allowing students to use their hands and imaginations while reinforcing key mathematical concepts. We are proud of how well our students embraced this opportunity to explore geometry in a dynamic and creative way.
