Little Sounds, Big words!

15th February 2025

Phonics is key in the early years. A strong phonics foundation plays an essential role in early childhood education, boosting children's confidence as they learn to read by blending sounds into words.

In FS2 at Braeside Thika, phonics lessons go beyond typical classroom activities. In addition to using flashcards and singing, teachers engage children in outdoor activities to explore the sound of the day. When learning the "ee" and "ar" digraphs, the children planted seeds on a farm. Similarly, when they learned the "oa" digraph, they made and rowed boats in the water play area.

The lessons are well blended to cater for the children and links to the learning areas in Early Years.Into small groups ,they explore and engage in different activities for enhancement.

A strong phonics foundation allows children to focus more on understanding the text rather than struggling with decoding words, leading to better comprehension skills. Children have become more confident and proficient in reading. Through phonics, their confidence in literacy and communication skills have increased, fostering a lifelong love of reading.
