Instructional Writing

15th October 2022

Our learners have been exploring writing instructional texts in a unique way, typical of our wide range of teaching and learning approaches.

During the week, we have been exploring instructional texts and how to write them. It was exciting to see how Year 2 learners readily understood what instructional texts are and showed eagerness to know the right mannerisms of writing this type of text.

Cold Task

To get us started, we chose to issue instructions orally.

Learners were tasked to think of their favourite games and create unique oral instructions that would engage a new player.

After several oral instructional opportunities, we settled on the popular game - Hopscotch. Using it as our sample, we created oral instructions of the game and to lead new players.

After successfully understanding the game orally, we decided to transfer our oral skills into writing.

After successfully finishing this activity collectively, we embarked on board games and other individual games that learners would want to write instructions about.

Results

Using our approach, writing instructions worked easily for our young learners. We’re delighted that they understood the practicality of instructional texts and how to write them.

Our next steps will include refining their cold tasks to create more appealing and precise instructions that will form part of their non-fiction text catalogues.
