Growing Plants

1st February 2025

At BTH in Year 2 class this term, we are embarking on an exciting adventure into the world of plants and discovering what they need to thrive! The children enthusiastically shared their knowledge, highlighting the essential ingredients for plant survival: water, sunlight, soil, and air. Our plant journey kicked off with vibrant nature walks, where we explored our school grounds and uncovered a variety of fascinating flowering and non-flowering plants. Just outside our Year 2 classroom, a delightful array of little flowers is flourishing, and we've spent incredible time examining the male and female parts and diving into the wonders of pollination.

Inside the classroom, the excitement continues with our hands-on experiments! We're currently growing spring onions using only water, and it’s thrilling to watch them shoot up taller each day as we carefully observe and record their transformations. In addition, we have planted bean seeds in soil, watering some while leaving others dry to see what happens—it's a real science experiment in action!

We also have a special little gardening greenhouse, where we have planted bulbs and are eagerly watering them, anticipating when they will sprout and be ready for harvesting. We are observing and documenting our findings as we discover the amazing secrets of what plants truly need to grow.
