Developing Narratives in the EYFS

6th June 2026

When a young child looks at an empty box, they don’t just see packaging, they see a world of endless possibilities. Within moments, a simple box can transform into a roaring excavator, a rocket blasting into space or a beautiful castle. This type of unstructured, child-led play is crucial in the EYFS fostering essential skills in creativity, critical problem-solving and emotional development.

Recently, our creative FS1 children put this into practice, diving into a world of imagination using nothing but empty boxes.

The children combined their brilliant ideas to construct a magnificent castle with a unique twist. It was a castle for a prince who happened to work in a garage! This delightful narrative sparked fantastic collaboration. As they built, the children eagerly exchanged ideas on how to engineer a large door and cut out windows. They naturally used mathematical language in their play, identifying shapes like rectangles, triangles and squares, while warmly connecting the castle's features to their own real-world homes
