On Friday the 21st May, BIIS had the opportunity to celebrate ‘World Cultural Day’. The day started off with a fashion show that saw children showcase a variety of cultural dressing from the famous Kenyan Maasai shuka, the Habesha dress of Ethiopia, Woza attire of South Africa and Saris from India.
Mouthwatering cultural dishes were also on display and were accompanied by a write up detailing ingredients, preparation and on what occasions the meals were served.
There was also lots of music and dance. Each class got an opportunity to learn and perform a cultural dance from their 'class country'
The day was marked with pomp and color as we celebrated our rich, diverse and unique cultures. This day will forever be inked in our memories as each student was dressed beyond recognition as they show cased how elegant and flamboyant their cultures are.
“Not only was this day exponentially educational but it also allowed me to have fun and forget about what the unprecedented times of Covid-19 have brought to us. My favourite part was generally the fashion show as we cat-walked down the runway with our friends cheering and jeering in a fun way... Whereas everyone got to display the thoughts that they put into their outfits and their various cultures, our class was really shy, albeit we ended up enjoying the day. ”

“Cultural day is a day that commemorates the different cultures that exist within our International Community. It helps showcase our individual diversity as we get to show what our cultures partake in and celebrate. The aroma and fragrance that was elicited by our diverse cultural artifacts took us in a journey down the memory lane reminding us how priceless our cultures are”
GEORGE
“Cultural day fosters respect and open-mindedness for other cultures. Celebrating our differences, as well as our common interests helps unite and educate us. Therefore, not only did we become more aware, we also gained a sense of pride for the diversity of our own culture. “
