Children are innovators and love exploring with open-ended materials where they extract their own knowledge, manipulate materials demonstrating their creativity and imaginative skills as they come up with different brilliant ideas.
FS1 children in Braeburn Imani displayed their creativity skills when they constructed wooden blocks and made Thika super highway and the flyover with cars moving on the bridge using blocks while other children worked together to make an excavator and a lorry in a construction site using 3D magnetic shapes.
Their creativity is at a high level and this was evident when they exchanged ideas on how to use the excavator. There are a multitude of benefits to playing with construction materials. One benefit that block play fosters is cognitive flexibility. Playing with blocks strengthens children's ability to quickly shift focus from one thing to another. Strong mental shifting allows children to adapt quickly to changes and also helps them to create alternative solutions to problems.
