Building a Reading Culture in EYFS: Nurturing Lifelong Learners

7th February 2025

The foundation of a child’s educational journey is rooted in cultivating a love for reading. At Braeside Thika, creating a positive and sustainable reading culture goes beyond teaching literacy; it inspires a lifelong passion for books and storytelling. By integrating reading into daily activities, children are encouraged to explore, imagine, and engage with stories in meaningful ways. A focus on creating accessible and enjoyable reading opportunities ensures that every child can develop their literacy skills while discovering the joy of books.

One of the key approaches in Braeside Thika’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is peer-to-peer reading. Peer reading not only strengthens literacy skills like fluency and comprehension but also promotes social and emotional development. As children take turns reading aloud and exchanging ideas, they learn to respect others’ viewpoints, practice active listening, and build confidence in their abilities.

By embedding peer-to-peer reading into daily routines, Braeside Thika nurtures confident, independent readers who are excited to explore the world of book; inspiring them to become lifelong learners with a deep appreciation for storytelling.
