This term has been a whirlwind of discovery for Year 10 Computer Science students at BTH, where learning is not just about theory but doing. In the world of computer hardware, these young tech enthusiasts have been peeling back the layers of technology to understand how the physical components of computers work.
They dismantled an entire system unit and reassembled it piece by piece. The students have been getting their hands dirty—literally! The classroom has transformed into a tech lab, buzzing with curiosity as they explore the inner workings of computers. Networking equipment also took center stage, with students examining various devices and cables that keep the digital world connected.
One of the highlights of the term was learning how to terminate a LAN cable using RJ-45 clips. The satisfaction of testing their own cables and seeing them work was a moment of triumph for all of them . But the real showstopper,a fibre optic cable! Students were amazed to discover that its core measures a mere 9 micrometres—thinner than a strand of human hair.
As the inaugural year for Computer Science at BTH, the subject is gaining momentum, with students’ interest growing by the day. With a steady stream of resources and more hands-on activities planned, the future of Computer Science at BTH is looking brighter than a fibre optic signal.
Stay tuned as these tech-savvy students continue to push boundaries and explore the ever-evolving world of computing. After all, in Computer Science, the only direction is forward!
