Children who practice being empathetic regularly form stronger bonds with their peers and family which leads to healthier relationships. They are also able to understand different perspectives and find effective solutions to conflicts more easily.
One of our core values in Braeside Thika is empathy. One of the ways this value is imparted to the children is through the skills they learn in the Red Cross club. In this club, children are taught first aid skills to enable them to be ready at all times to help any casualty they will come across. In one of the lessons covered, children were enthusiastic to talk about their experiences. Here is what they had to say:
Tania Wambetha: Today’s lesson in the Red Cross club was very interesting. I learnt how to help a person with a broken hand. I learnt how to tie an arm sling and how to apply direct pressure to a bleeding injury.
Shamira Wambui: I liked the way we practiced by tying each other’s arm to demonstrate how one can help a person who has a broken arm.
Nathaniel: In the Red Cross club, we mix fun and safety into our lessons and the best part is the outdoor lessons. Two things that we have learned so far include how to save the environment and how to make slings. I’m having fun with both of these.
Ethan: The Red Cross is the best club you can be in! Not only does it help you socialise and learn about emergency procedures, but it also helps you know what to do during any situation, and it can make you feel confident in the face of any emergency. Today, we had fun learning how to help people with broken hands and how-to put-on gloves correctly. The club also taught us how to save the Earth, such as saving electricity, water, and trees, and I can’t wait to continue learning
