BTH Excels at World Scholars Cup Competition

24th February 2024

Theme: Reconstructing the Past

Braeside Thika students this year participated in the renowned World Scholars Club, an international academic competition that is a celebration of learning. Well, that and earning alpacas, trophies and medals! That was exactly how we walked out of Light International School’s largest round ever of the Scholars Cup. A big well done to the amazing performance by the following students who participated: Zawadi, Nikita, Bushraa, Tasneem, Adol, Nedra, Zahri, Amara, Ankita, Amina and Ipshita.

The theme for this round was ‘Reconstructing the Past’. Our students, in their 6 teams, were tasked with four challenges:

  1. Team debate-students needed to debate passionately for or against three different motions that were shared. They had 15 minutes of preparation. The pressure was real!
  2. Team collaborative writing- in their teams, students received six different prompts for the six subjects they studied. From these, students chose three and each member wrote about one, using her peers' feedback and support to build coherent creative pieces to outshine other competing teams.
  3. Scholars challenge- Independently, students answered 120 multiple-choice questions based on the World Scholars Cup syllabus.
  4. Scholars bowl-In their teams, students watched different prompts and answered questions using clickers. This was quite a nail-biting experience!

Our students won many gold and silver medals mainly in debate and collaborative writing. In the reflection meeting, they agreed that mastering the syllabus to do even better in the scholars challenge and bowl are now areas of focus. The subjects covered in the syllabus are history, social studies, art and music, literature and media, science and technology, and a special area (...and next year, maths!).

This was the most exciting thing ever and especially being chosen to be a judge because it was 1 in 200 students. I really enjoyed it and I hope to continue it further. Zawadi

So fun!! Bushraa

Even though it was very crowded, we still qualified for the global rounds out of Africa. We are really excited, I won 8 medals-5 gold and 3 silver. Nikita
