Sixth Form

Introduction

Braeburn Imani Sixth Form has a positive and vibrant atmosphere with a strong sense of community. A broadly based educational experience is provided for the full time students. The importance of the development in each individual student is recognised. Operating in a young adult environment, the Sixth Form provides a bridge between the world of school and tertiary education or employment. The aim is to give students the skills, opportunities and qualifications needed to progress.

We believe that much of the success of Braeburn Imani High School lies in the strong emphasis on pastoral care and a concern for the particular needs of each individual student. The Sixth Form has its own distinctive atmosphere and a clear sense of community. Our Careers team provides continual expert guidance as well as offering precise preparation for applications to higher education and employment. We aim to develop mature young adults with the life skills for further education.

We have a flourishing Sixth Form which offers a gateway to Colleges and Universities. At the end of Year 13, all our students qualify for further studies and proceed to reputable Universities locally and overseas to pursue careers of their choice.

Curriculum

Braeburn Imani offers students two alternative pathways to successful university or professional careers in the guise of A Levels or the BTEC programme.

AS and A-Level: Year 12 and 13

To enter the A Level programme, a student must have passes at ‘C’ grade or above in at least 5 subjects at IGCSE or an equivalent and should have gained a grade B in the subject they wish to study at A-Level.  Students typically choose to study three subjects which are examined either at the end of Year 13 as an A Level but with some also being tested mid-way in term 3 of Year 12 as an AS-Level.

Additionally to help students develop, all students take an AS in Global Perspectives which is taught over two years and examined in Year 13 at AS level

A Level Subjects

Students can choose subject options from the wide range offered:

  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Literature in English
  • Art
  • Psychology
  • History
  • Geography
  • Global Perspectives

Throughout the two years, students also have lessons in Physical Education and Life Skills.  In addition, they can take part in all co-curricular programmes.

AS and A Levels are challenging courses, but for students who are prepared to work and study hard, Braeburn Imani provides an excellent environment in which to complete school and embark on a successful career, either through university education or other tertiary institutions.

AS and A Level examinations are taken at the end of Year 12 and Year 13 respectively.  These qualifications provide admission to top local and international universities.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

To enter the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Diploma Programme, a student must have at least 5 IGCSE grades at A*-G.

The BTEC Extended Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workspace situations, activities and demands. BTEC is equivalent to 3 A Level subjects, providing both a broad foundation of Business Education and a firm basis for specialisation in a selected avenue of business activity.

The course lasts two years and has 18 units where students are expected to take 3 units per term. The qualification is awarded by Edexcel International within the BTEC Brand, providing entry to higher education and employment.

BTEC and A-Level Combined Courses

Should a student wish to, he or she can take a combination of the BTEC course and A-Levels through taking a single award (6 BTEC units) and two A-Levels or a double award (12 BTEC units) and one A-Level or a full extended diploma (18 units) or 3 A-levels. All combinations have the equivalence to 3 A-levels and are accepted at universities in Kenya as well as overseas.

University Placements

The students receive expert guidance throughout the university application process.  The Braeburn Group of International Schools has a senior member of staff who deals solely with career guidance and university placement, ensuring that our parents are well informed and our students receive good advice and have the best chance of earning a place in a university of their choice across the world.
